My students will soon begin their Greek Mythology unit. Many of them don't believe these stories can be interesting, nor that they have any relevance. I plan to teach the foundation, then use the novel to bridge the gap between modern and myth to help students deepen their understanding. The graphic novels will be used in a station to help learners visualize what is going on, as a method to deepen understanding and help struggling readers. After we read we will have some fun projects such as having the students determine which "cabin" they would belong to (a characterization activity), debating which Greek figure would make the best president (practicing finding and using evidence, as well as speaking skills), and finally begin exploring the "Monomyth," or the "Archetypal Hero's Journey," giving students a deeper understanding of how stories are formed, structured, and read. The understanding of this could improve their understanding of every story they read, watch, or hear for the rest of their lives.
