Our girls don't like not being prepared for that time of the month. They're embarassed to talk about it at home sometimes. A lot of our ELL students don't like to put the burden on their families as they see them struggling already to make ends meet. They know that the cost of those products are costly and so they don't tell them when they have their periods. So when they come to school, they tell the nurse or our ESOL teacher. \r\nThey were also so excited to have new hairbrushes, lip balm, and toiletries. It was like Christmas for them in the Spring! The excited look on their faces was priceless. They were so very happy. \r\nWhen I brought this project to them, they were thrilled. When it was funded, the girls were so excited. Each month, they go to the closet and they get a \"shopping bag\" and they take what they need. It's a very discreet process so no one knows what they are doing. It works out perfectly and the girls don't have to be embarassed with what they are doing. There is no burden on them or the parents. Students are also learning how to ask thoughtful questions about what they read, discuss ideas with their classmates, and build confidence in expressing their thoughts about a story.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is an active and engaging experience. Students participate in small-group reading, partner discussions, and independent reading time where they can explore books that match their interests and reading levels. We often pause to talk about characters, make predictions about what might happen next, and reflect on the lessons within each story. These moments help students become thoughtful, confident readers.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have already shown a special connection to the new books. Some who were previously hesitant about reading are now excited to pick up a book and share what they discovered. I was able to hand out the sweatshirts to a lot of my girls and the long sleeve shirts were grabbed up by my boys.
