The area includes a sensory table that students can use when they are feeling angry, frustrated, or upset. When a child needs a break, they go to the table and turn over one of the sensory timers. This gives them a clear, structured amount of time to calm their bodies and emotions before returning to our activity.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nStudents have learned to use this space appropriately and independently. They enjoy using the sensory table because it is the perfect size for them and feels like a safe, welcoming place. Over time, I have noticed that students are able to regulate their emotions more quickly and return to learning with a better mindset. The timer helps create consistency and teaches them patience and self-control.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the calm down area helps students understand that it is okay to feel angry or sad. We focus on teaching that emotions are normal, but how we respond to those emotions is what matters. This space has supported a more positive classroom culture, reduced disruptions, and helped students develop important social-emotional skills that will benefit them both in and out of the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1769178202610,"projectUrl":"project/calm-area/10010701/","projectTitle":"Calm Area","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Doucette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5176523_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720553086978","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5176523"},{"teacherId":7732872,"projectId":9149724,"letterContent":"I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation of sensory play items to our classroom. Since receiving these materials, our students have shown remarkable engagement and enthusiasm in their learning journey. The moment the students first saw the new sensory items, their eyes lit up with excitement and curiosity. They immediately began exploring the different textures, colors, and shapes, creating an atmosphere of genuine joy and discovery in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThese sensory resources have become an integral part of our daily learning activities. Students are developing crucial social skills as they learn to share materials and work collaboratively during sensory play sessions. The materials have been particularly effective in teaching fundamental concepts such as colors, shapes, numbers, and letters through hands-on exploration. We've incorporated the items into our weather studies, allowing students to create tactile representations of different weather patterns.","fullyFundedDate":1746786070227,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-exploration-learning-through-pl/9149724/","projectTitle":"Sensory Exploration: Learning through Play","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Emily","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7732872_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1741440272209","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sensoryranchinitiative"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46981","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":735,"numTeachers":52,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":55,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":82.2,"schoolId":46981,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Scott Lake Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Scott Lake Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/polk-county-school-district/scott-lake-elementary-school/46981"}
