He researched plant compatibility, soil composition, moisture balance, and light requirements before carefully constructing his enclosed environment. He is now monitoring humidity levels, plant growth, and condensation patterns while documenting changes over time. This project has allowed him to apply life science concepts in a real-world, investigative way.\r\n\r\nAnother student is building and soldering his own LED light strip system. He has been learning about circuits, polarity, voltage, and safe soldering techniques. Measuring, cutting, wiring, and troubleshooting his LED strip has given him a true engineering experience. \r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, both students were immediately curious and excited. They were especially excited to use real tools and materials typically reserved for advanced STEM settings. Being trusted with authentic equipment elevated their sense of responsibility and pride in their work.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve deepening the learning. The terrarium project will expand into data collection and analysis—tracking growth rates and environmental stability over time. The LED project will move into refining the lighting system, and exploring efficiency. Both students will present their findings, explaining not only what they built, but the scientific and engineering principles behind their work.\r\n\r\nYour support has allowed these students to move beyond worksheets and into authentic innovation. They are not just learning about science and engineering—they are doing it. Thank you for making that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1760616740956,"projectUrl":"project/stem-in-their-hands-student-driven-disc/9676723/","projectTitle":"STEM in Their Hands: Student-Driven Discovery","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Osborn Vasquez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10195810_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755779089080","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10195810"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_66461","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":181,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":84,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.0,"schoolId":66461,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Passport Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Passport Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/orange-county-public-schools/passport-school-inc/66461"}
