Your generosity has expanded our classroom library and given students access to texts they are excited to read. Students are able to independently choose and read these books at their own pace, while also enjoying teacher read-alouds that introduce them to new authors, genres, characters, and perspectives.\r\nThese new texts provide meaningful opportunities to practice important reading skills and lessons. As students read, they work on summarizing by identifying the most important events and details, determining the main idea, making inferences, describing characters, examining how a story's setting influences the plot, and using evidence from the text to support their thinking. Reading in our classroom looks like a combination of independent reading, partner conversations, small-group instruction, and read-alouds. Students discuss their ideas, respond to questions, make connections, and share their thinking in writing and conversation.\r\nMany of our students are especially enjoying the new books because they can see themselves as capable, independent readers and make choices based on their interests. Students who may not always be eager to read have been drawn in by the variety of topics, characters, and storylines available to them. Others are excited to recommend books to classmates or listen closely during read-alouds so they can experience a story together.
