This course has no textbook, so the sources are the course: Supreme Court decisions, speeches, protest pamphlets, photographs, and chapters from historians who disagree with each other. The new printer means every student gets a clean, line-numbered copy to mark up. They underline, argue in the margins, and come back to the same page weeks later when they need evidence for an essay.\r\n\r\nOne lesson shows what that makes possible. Students built a paragraph comparing Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X by cutting printed evidence into strips and physically arranging them on their desks, source next to background knowledge, then writing the sentence that connects each pair. You can't do that on a laptop screen. The magnetic strips put the best paragraphs up on the board, where the whole class can see how a strong argument is built and erase and rearrange it together. We call the routine Fieldnotes. Students write down only what they can see, and then I reveal what the object actually is along with a voice from inside the tradition. Those notebooks stay in the classroom all year. Before your gift they lived in leaning stacks on a back counter. Now each class has its own cubes on the new shelves, and students grab theirs on the way in without being asked. When the room is organized, the first five minutes go to thinking instead of searching.\r\n\r\nThe drawers changed what I can attempt. In World Religions, teams just finished eight-page comic books retelling the origin story of a Native nation, adapted strictly from a published telling by a Native author. One rule: anything the source leaves out has to be drawn as a dotted outline. That project needs markers, paper, rulers, and source cards for six teams in one two-hour block. Everything had a labeled drawer, so setup took minutes instead of half the period. Every student left with a full set of all six comics. Thank you for believing in these students. Working with a professional printer teaches them how lighting, resolution, and paper choices directly impact how traditional media translates into print, giving them practical studio skills for preserving their original works.\r\n\r\nSeeing their physical artwork printed with gallery-level accuracy and fine detail has been incredibly exciting for these young artists. Reproducing their work on archival-quality paper gives them immediate pride and makes their portfolios look sleek and professional. This capability allows students to easily submit high-quality prints to contests, prepare entries for local exhibitions, and keep top-tier reproductions for their personal archives without sacrificing the rich colors and textures of their original pieces.
