Before our very first day of kindergarten, each student received a small plush bear at orientation. That simple bear became a special connection between home and school and helped our students begin feeling like they were already part of our classroom family before they ever walked through the doors on the first day. It gave us something familiar to talk about, share, and connect over, helping ease those first-day nerves and begin building our classroom community from the very beginning.\r\n\r\nOur play bakery has continued that sense of community while giving our students a space to learn through play. As they take on different roles; bakers, customers, cashiers, and restaurant workers,they naturally practice communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. They create menus, decide what to make, work through disagreements, count and exchange pretend money, and use their imaginations to create their own stories and experiences.\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat may look like simple play to an adult is actually a rich learning experience for a kindergartener. The bakery encourages students to use language, think creatively, solve problems independently, and work together with their classmates. It has given even our quieter students opportunities to find their voice and has created countless moments for students to practice social skills in a fun and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nTogether, the supplies you helped get to my kiddos has helped us build more than a classroom, they have helped us build a community where children feel connected, confident, creative, and excited to learn. I am so grateful for the opportunity to provide experiences that make our kindergarten classroom feel like a place where every child belongs. We would first discuss the previous chapters and then I would play the audio of the next chapter. Students would then read the remaining week's chapters for homework. The nautical vocabulary, setting, and plot required students to dig deep and make connections beyond the surface.\r\n\r\nThe theme of constantly moving forward through all and any storm life throws at you allowed the students to connect with the main character, teaching them that your circumstances don't define your future. \r\nThank you, again!
