We've been busy setting up routines and getting our learning started this year and I hadn't yet found a time to book talk these books as they merited! But we finally did and the books are flying off the shelves.\r\n\r\nAs you may have noticed, the books you helped us get represent many different student traits: gender, religion, race, interests, etc. When selecting titles, I tried to find books that would serve as mirrors for children, books where they would see themselves in the characters and the settings. And while this is true that some students are reading the books where they see themselves, others are instead focusing on books that mirror their friends' experiences. One child told me that he selected the book Once Upon an Eid so that he could understand more about his best friend's culture. Instead of a mirror, this book is a window for the child and a chance to build bridges between cultures. (Books as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors is the work of Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop and a guiding principle in how I try to build our classroom library.)\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support of this collection. Each day, they eagerly curl up with stories that inspire their imaginations and stretch their minds. With these new books, the first graders are learning to:\r\n *Strengthen phonics and decoding skills by sounding out new words\r\n *Build reading fluency as they practice smoothly and with expression\r\n *Expand their vocabulary by exploring rich and varied texts\r\n *Develop comprehension skills like making predictions, retelling, and identifying \r\n main ideas\r\n *Connecting reading to writing by creating their own stories\r\n \r\nOur first graders are nurturing a love for books and learning that will last a lifetime.\r\n\r\nThe Cozy Reading Corner has created a special place for children to read with partners, share discoveries, and build confidence as independent readers. It's more than just a rug and a bookshelf-it's a safe and welcoming corner where learning feels like an adventure.\r\n\r\nWithout your generosity, this dream space for young readers would not have been possible. In a world that increasingly relies on digital literacy, these laptops are far more than tools—they are gateways to opportunity. For many of our students, particularly those without consistent access to devices at home, these laptops offer an essential bridge to the resources, experiences, and skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.\r\n\r\nWith these new laptops in the classroom, students can now engage in research-based learning, participate in interactive educational platforms, and complete assignments that require digital tools with greater ease and independence. Whether they are crafting a persuasive essay in Google Docs, collaborating on a science project via shared slides, or exploring educational simulations and coding programs, students are able to dive deeper into content and express their understanding in innovative ways. The integration of technology into daily lessons has already elevated the level of engagement in our classroom, encouraging students to take initiative, think critically, and explore new ways of problem-solving.","fullyFundedDate":1590723771164,"projectUrl":"project/got-tech-not-yet/4939593/","projectTitle":"Got Tech? Three days later I checked, and we were completely funded. I was in shock and had to refresh and check my e-mail to see if this was correct. Once I realized this was correct, I could not wait to share the news with the children. First thing in the morning when all the students arrived, I shared the news, and they were so excited. Everyday asking if the packages were here yet. \r\n\r\nI want to thank you all for your generosity in supporting my Kindergarten class this year. I waited for all the boxes to arrive stacking them up in front of the class. Once they all arrived, I told the kids to join me on the carpet and placed the boxes in the middle of them all. One by one, I emptied out each box. Watching the smiles on the kids' faces was priceless. The new resources are used daily for STEM activities, science, and math. Marble Run was perfect for introducing gravity to the kids. The puzzles challenged the students and allowed them to practice working together and problem solve.\r\n\r\nI cannot wait until next year to see how the students will build upon the use of these materials. I plan to use these materials to introduce teamwork and teach problem solving at the beginning of the next school year.","fullyFundedDate":1739546146643,"projectUrl":"project/collaborating-and-creating-in-kindergart/9090487/","projectTitle":"Collaborating and Creating in Kindergarten","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Hess","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3963601_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1580611923150","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/karen-hess"},{"teacherId":886634,"projectId":9045546,"letterContent":"Thank you for your support of our learning!\r\n\r\nThis was not the flashiest of grants - the sticky tack and the coils for notebooks are used every day in small moments.
