The comfortable seating and inviting space have created a welcoming area where students can relax, explore books, and practice important literacy and communication skills in a way that feels meaningful and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were excited to have a special place in the classroom that was just for reading. They enjoyed choosing where to sit and looking through the new books. For many of my students, having an engaging and comfortable environment makes a big difference in their willingness to participate and try something new.\r\n\r\nWe are using the reading corner during lessons to work on vocabulary, comprehension, answering questions, describing, making connections, and communicating about what we read. Students are able to choose books that match their interests and abilities, which helps them feel more independent and successful. One of my favorite moments has been watching students become excited to share a book or picture with a peer and talk about what they see or understand.\r\n\r\nThe next step is to continue building our classroom library and using the reading corner as part of our ongoing literacy and communication activities. Students will continue practicing new vocabulary, retelling stories, making predictions, answering questions, and expressing their thoughts and opinions about books.\r\n\r\nThis project has given my students more than a place to read. There was a lot of motivation for students at all grade levels to work hard, make good choices and earn Otter Bucks to adopt a plush puppy. It was cute to watch the students carefully choose their puppy and then think of the perfect name. Many students carried their puppies with them daily and teachers commented that they also had a positive effect on students in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe school store is a central part of our Positive Behavior program, and of our school. The students love to visit the school store and shop for items with the Otter Bucks that they have earned. Adding new items, keeps the excitement going throughout the year. In the beginning of the school year, they were read alouds, teaching characters, settings, and main events. Students especially loved listening to Carina Felina which reminded them of the little old lady who swallowed a fly. \r\nAs the year went on, students practiced being the teacher and used the books to retell the story and practice identifying the parts of a book.
