My students are wonderful citizens of this world. Unfortunately, they are growing up in a poverty stricken neighborhood and many of their parents are either un- or underemployed rendering their children disadvantaged in many ways. Our wonderful school is one of the only places that feeds their stomachs as well as their brains, and boy, do they come to school hungry. They all have great potential and work hard to reach their goals. We face numerous challenges, poverty, crime, and illiteracy, only to mention a few. However, the light that is ignited through positive, learning-based interactions is simply astonishing. I firmly believe that all of these students will be able to have a positive impact on this society, as long as we give them the tools and know-how to sustain themselves in our modernized world.
