The students were so excited to see the new items available for purchase with their school money, 'Otter Bucks'. It was apparent with so many cool things to choose from, the students had to prioritize what they wanted, or budget their money and save for a special item. The items that they chose were fun to buy, but also served a purpose as a school supply or tool to use in their classroom and help them learn. \r\n\r\nThe school store, has also served as a place to build school community, with older students helping younger students, students sharing with others and contributing an extra buck or two, allowing another student to get what they really want. There is an energy and enthusiasm that surrounds the school store whether the students come to us or we take the store to the kindergarten classrooms. We received everything that would help build a welcoming learning environment. We received our smiley face carpet that we use everyday for phonics. Students also really love working on this carpet during independent work time since I love providing flexible seating to my students. The colors are bright and happy which helps create that positive environment in my classroom. We received the book storage bins which my students use to organize their phonics items. This helps keeps their items labeled and organized so they won't have to stuff their desks too much. We received 2 lamps that help provide warm lighting in my classroom. This provides perfect lighting to create a cozy environment throughout the day when students need that kind of environment to calm down. Lastly, we received a digital clock that displays the time. Students love to know what time it is since they love following our daily schedule on the board. Kids have the need to know what we are doing and at what time we are doing it. My students and I appreciate everything we received. They were surprised every time I put out a new item. It was like receiving surprises every other day. In 2nd grade the dictionaries promote independence, students now reference them during reading and writing without constant teacher support. In kindergarten, engagement has increased and the visual scaffolding has especially benefited English Language Learners and struggling readers. The colored ink allowed us to create special certificates that are presented to students who receive positive referrals and who are selected as the student of the month.\r\n\r\nWe also print out each student's picture in color to display on bulletin boards around the school. The student's express pride as they see their pictures displayed and other students are inspired as they see their classmates recognized for their hard work and positive choices.\r\n\r\nAs an added bonus, we are able to print special characters in this case, our teachers created into a colorful insect which move as classes earn stickers by following the school wide expectations. The students love seeing their teachers in insect form.
