With the games and snacks, we had an opportunity to relax and unwind in a safe and positive setting, before our summer send off.\r\nMany of my students don't see each other over the summer break, and the vast majority of them spend their summer with little to no socialization or interaction with their peers. The resources for this project allowed students to interact in a positive manner and really enjoy their time with their peers in an 'off the phone' interactive experience. My marine science magnet middle school students at our Title 1 middle school in Southeast Florida love to spend time outdoors. Many middle school teens today don't really understand the harmful impacts of exposure to the sun's rays. Donations to this project provided funding for sunshades, a portable water cooler, and scientific skin cancer related information. \r\nThe skin cancer information was able to be utilized in our Biomedical Science elective classes. Students learned about safe practices and how to protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays. This impactful project provided our students with tools to understand the importance of safe sun exposure. The Sun Shade sails provide important shade over our student (remotely operated vehicles) ROV practice pool, providing the students with a safe space to work on their ROV skills. The water cooler has been used at all of our field excursions as well as during our work time in school garden to keep the kids hydrated and healthy. With the items from this project, we have been able to safely enjoy outdoor activities while keeping in mind the harmful sun exposure that comes with being outside in the South Florida sun. During our 2025 Showcase, students learned about how we can help to protect and conserve our oceans and backyard coastal habitats and displayed their learning at a community event. They publicly presented their learning through PBL games and presentations, engaging the community in learning about how we can all make a difference. All the participation incentives, from shark candy bracelets to shark rubber bracelets were enthusiastically welcomed by the students. The absolute fan favorite is the shark blow up costume. The kids all want to wear it to spread shark cheer!\r\nThis year our students will once again present their learning at this annual PBL showcase for all to see and hear. We hope to continue to engage our families and the community at large in this important conservation event. Through family and community involvement we can make actionable changes and help our students and wider community to develop a conservation mindset! As this week comes to a close the students have been making gingerbread cookies to share with their friends and family. The mixers you have helped provide have opened so many doors for the students to express their creativity and develop new skills.
