They feel special when they get to use it, like a prize to be earned. They also feel special when they get to use the keyboard and mouse to answer work on the smart board. Because of your kindness, my 8th grade math classroom has been transformed into a more inclusive, collaborative, and engaging learning environment; one that truly supports all learners. I am incredibly grateful for your investment in my students and for believing in their ability to grow, communicate, and succeed in mathematics.\r\n\r\nMy classroom serves students with learning disabilities and other specific needs and accommodations, and meeting their diverse needs requires thoughtful tools and intentional structures. The whiteboards you funded have made a powerful and immediate impact on how my students learn and interact with math. What might seem like a simple resource has become a cornerstone of instruction, communication, and community in our classroom.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful changes I have observed is in student communication. Many of my students struggle with processing, organization, or written expression, which can make traditional math work challenging and discouraging. The whiteboards provide a low-risk, flexible space where students can try strategies, make mistakes, erase, and revise without fear. This has encouraged students to talk through the math taking place, explain their thinking aloud, and ask questions when they are unsure. As they verbalize their reasoning, they are building math literacy and strengthening their understanding in ways that are accessible and supportive of their learning needs.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards have also significantly improved collaboration and peer support in our classroom. Students regularly work together on problem-solving tasks, using the boards as a shared space to represent ideas visually and step through processes as a group. I often see students supporting one another by breaking problems into smaller steps, offering reminders, or rephrasing explanations in ways that make sense to their peers. This peer-to-peer learning has been especially powerful for students with IEPs, as it reinforces concepts through multiple modalities: visual, verbal, and social.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the sense of community in our classroom has grown stronger because of these tools. Students no longer feel isolated in their learning; instead, they see themselves as part of a team working toward a common goal. The whiteboards have helped create a classroom culture where collaboration is expected and celebrated. Students encourage one another, share strategies, and recognize that everyone brings strengths to the group. This has boosted confidence, particularly for students who previously felt anxious or disengaged during math instruction.\r\n\r\nThe use of whiteboards has also supported the development of math fluency. As students work together, they practice using math vocabulary, organizing their thinking, and justifying their answers. Because the boards are reusable and interactive, students stay engaged and focused for longer periods of time. They are not just completing problems. They are actively discussing processes, identifying errors, and making connections. This has led to improved persistence, deeper understanding, and increased participation from students who may have struggled to engage in the past.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting Math Literacy in Action. Your generosity has made a lasting difference in the daily experiences of my students. Because of you, my classroom is a place where all learners, including those with learning disabilities and IEPs, feel supported, capable, and empowered to engage in meaningful mathematical thinking. My students and I are deeply thankful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1760931175499,"projectUrl":"project/math-literacy-in-action/9838713/","projectTitle":"Math Literacy in Action!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Phanos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10316107"},{"teacherId":10334880,"projectId":9862713,"letterContent":"How are you and your students using the new resources? Share a specific classroom project or moment.\r\nI work with special education students, and the resources funded through DonorsChoose have already made a meaningful impact for my students. Students are able to use the noise-canceling headphones during independent work and assessments to help manage sensory overload and improve focus. The variety of fidgets allows students to self-regulate in ways that best meet their individual needs, helping them remain engaged and calm during lessons. We can also use the colorful pens to annotate texts, which has increased student participation and motivation during reading tasks. Additionally, the games have become a valuable tool for structured brain breaks, supporting both social skills and cognitive development.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nMy students were absolutely thrilled when they saw all of the new items. Their excitement was immediate, and many students eagerly shared how they hoped to use the headphones, fidgets, and games. It was incredibly rewarding to see them feel supported and valued, knowing these tools were chosen specifically to help them succeed.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity and for funding my project.
