That said, students in 6th grade are already playing full songs with three chords. 7th and 8th grade students are already playing pieces with 3-4 chords and have started using the instruments to write out their own harmony and rhythm patterns. With all this work across the grades, students are also learning the symbols of standard music notation and chord notation. The students have been pumped to get the ukes out and start playing (the pictures are from the very first class that got to play them, we had a little internal competition, and you can see the 6th graders enthusiasm)! \r\n\r\nThis is the huge part for targeting literacy gains. Students who can understand, recognize, and manipulate symbols in notation can also see connections in other symbolic systems, like language and mathematics. The music literacy gains are the main event. Students are able to process harmony and form structures in real time with once the playing ability is there on the ukulele, and not just rely on theoretical knowledge in a workbook. I'm very excited to see how far the students get with their playing, and their application of the knowledge with song writing and transfer knowledge to part signing!","fullyFundedDate":1760722772719,"projectUrl":"project/ukuleles-for-the-chorus-room/9832513/","projectTitle":"Ukuleles for the Chorus Room","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ronaghan","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9618939"},{"teacherId":7477188,"projectId":9834576,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and for gifting my students items for us to create a personal library in our classroom.
