Students will be using the interactive whiteboard daily during the 90 minute block. One area my students struggle the most with is listening and speaking Spanish. Having taught Immersive Spanish for many years, I understand how frightening an immersive classroom can be to a middle school student. Speaking a new language requires confidence. I am requesting an interactive whiteboard to provide authentic comprehensible input in a fun way for my 6th and 7th graders. Students will be able to listen to and view stories/videos to practice listening and oral skills which will boost their listening and speaking confidence. In my classroom, we practice listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies. The addition of technology would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of listening and speaking. Students who are confident in their listening and speaking abilities will be ready and willing to use the target language. Students are on a block schedule, which means 90 minute class periods. It is very difficult for 11-12 year old students to sit for that length of time. The interactive whiteboard would also promote movement in the classroom, allowing for purposeful, engaging movements throughout my lessons. Movement is a brain break for many students as this could be their only time to move about with the exception of hallway transitions. Since my classes are 32 students or greater, an interactive whiteboard would allow me to meet the learning styles of more students throughout the class period meeting IEP and 504 accommodation requirements as well as addressing the infamous multiple intelligences and personality types. I will be able to engage more students each class period. An interactive whiteboard would allow me to connect to my students through technology in a meaningful way.
