These new books have opened doors for deep discussions about identity, empathy, and resilience, skills that extend far beyond the pages of a story. Students are developing critical reading strategies such as analyzing character motivation, tracing theme development, and drawing connections between literature and their own lives. Many of these texts also provide opportunities for students to explore social and historical contexts, helping them think critically about the world around them.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is both communal and personal. Students begin each day with independent reading time, where they dive into books that match their interests and reading levels. Later, they engage in small-group discussions, book talks, and reflection journals to share insights and make text-to-text and text-to-self connections. The room buzzes with excitement as students recommend books to one another and proudly track their reading progress.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once reluctant readers have found a spark through these new additions. One student who rarely finished a book before is now on book 3 of a series provided by this project. The classroom library has become more than just a collection of books. It's a reflection of our students' voices, a catalyst for growth, and a reminder that every reader deserves to see themselves in a story.","fullyFundedDate":1752760229475,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-8th-grade-readers-with-a-dive/9445931/","projectTitle":"Empowering 8th Grade Readers with a Diverse Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Machol","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10070607_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751650126875","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10070607"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_75036","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":820,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":78.8,"schoolId":75036,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Waterbury Arts Magnet School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Waterbury Arts Magnet School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/waterbury-public-schools/waterbury-arts-magnet-school/75036"}
