Using pool noodles to find the answer rather than just raising your hand is a silly, yet simple way to make learning fun. Using yarn to connect themes and evidence like a detective pin wall is way more fun then explaining connections in with a class discussion or powerpoint. Playing human bingo to review vocab terms adds a silly, yet memorable way to review material. Using cups and index card to stack and identify answers to earn points adds a competitive and kinesthetic means in which to learn and demonstrate content knowledge. These aren't supplies that you can just pick up from the office, but rather, these are the materials that transform a classroom. These texts, which cover a wide variety of topics and perspectives, allow students to build connections with novels that they may not have ever seen or heard of. The new titles have added depth to class discussions, giving students the chance to hear stories and perspectives they might not encounter otherwise. Our library now feels like a safer space where students can explore who they are, connect with one another, and learn why diversity matters so much. Everyone immediately wanted to be the first to try out the new technology and start putting together their own musical projects. We even had a number of new students joining our classroom so they could try out some of the cool creativity tools Donors Choose has provided.\r\n\r\nThese tools allow students not only to engage in the classroom in a creative and exciting manner, but additionally allow students to showcase what they're doing with peers, and work with other students to come up with ideas that inspire, motivate, and become a catalyst for further engagement. Being that my classroom environment in which the tools get used is an advisory room, there is no specific assignment that requires the use of these tools, but that is part of what makes it so exciting to see kids engage! They are doing it because they want to do it, not because they're assigned to do it. There's genuine exploratory and student lead connections happening here! \r\n\r\nYour contributions have made all of this possible, and I can't thank you enough! McManus\r\nA Good Girl's Guide to Murder - Holly Jackson\r\n\r\nAnd as you can see, our book closet is filled with the potential reads for the rest of the school year before sending these seniors off on the next step of their individual journeys into adulthood. \r\n\r\nThese journals have been an integral part of our reading and thinking process as students have utilized them with fidelity to track thinking and to keep track of multiple narrators / unreliable narrators. Not only is it useful for keeping track of thoughts, but students have started to create their own questions and use these during Socratic Seminars.
