I am working hard to increase the opportunities for arts courses at my high school and this project helped make it happen! So far this year I was able to continue 2 sections of Ceramics I and add a section of Ceramics II. I also already have 3 students who have expressed interest in continuing their Ceramics work through an Independent Study next semester and I am so lucky to be able to offer this without concern for lack of supplies.\r\nMy current Ceramics I students started by practicing pinch pots and then made another and used additional attachment techniques to turn it into an object or animal of their choice. They are currently completing a relief sculpture tile project and planning their coil pots.\r\nMy Ceramics II students completed an abstract practice piece and a double pinch pot project of their design. We are now working on an \"Is It Clay\" challenge to create realistic-looking food. From s'mores to fruit to cake to chicken- they are having fun with it!\r\nAll of my students are excited about the additional glazing materials we have to look forward to after the pieces are bisque fired. When the items arrived I had students help open and unpack the boxes. They asked about all of the individual materials and learned a little bit about what was to come as I explained what each tool and material was used for.\r\nWe found out at the beginning of this school year, that the \"Studio Arts\" course will run during the second semester of the year. There is a full roster of students excited to begin the course in January. Students in \"Studio Arts\" will get a taste of a variety of media and techniques. They will experiment with collage, paper sculpture, and fiber processes. The printmaking unit will include styrofoam printing and block printing with \"easy cut\" material, which is a wonderful school-friendly alternative to linoleum. They will start with a focus on line design and composition with the styrofoam and will move up to using the lino cutters on the easy cut blocks. With this process they will have to consider positive and negative space and the reductive practice; which means there is a lot of planning ahead. The students that I have been able to speak to about the process are very excited to learn how to use the tools for printmaking and be able to make multiple copies of their artwork. \r\nI thank you all again for helping to make this happen. It was a joy to see them celebrate in such a beautiful setting. This iPad has helped students in my classroom become more independent. While we do have access to Chromebooks, having an iPad allows students to experience a more diverse way of learning—not just through websites, but also through applications that are only available on iPads.\r\n\r\nMy students are especially excited to have this iPad in class because they can use it for a variety of purposes. As juniors and seniors in high school, they are using it for classwork, SAT preparation, and to build important communication skills.
