Because of you, all of our students have earbuds that they can use for their assignments! \r\nThough every single student has shown immense gratitude, I have to share about one particular student who was greatly impacted. He comes from a low-income family and has severe emotional and learning needs. He came back to school after an extended absence and was very far behind, so I sat next to him during class to help him get started. He needed to be able to listen to a story being read to him, and his regular para was already helping other students. So, I gave him a pair of the earbuds you generously donated, and he was able to complete the assignment. He came to me after class to return them, and I told him that he was able to keep them. He teared up and said that was the nicest thing anyone had done for him in a long time. It warmed my heart to know that he felt love today.\r\nThank you for making life so much easier for our students, particularly our audio learners. I now have supplies for students who are without and for those who need a supply refresh! So far we have used the post-it notes for classroom collaboration and the students love the fresh bright colors (it's the small things, right?). We use an alarming amount of post-it notes in AVID and this helped so that I don't have to spend my entire budget on restocking. \r\n\r\nWe also were able to purchase quite a few of the sturdy binders that middle schoolers aren't embarrassed to carry around. We now have pillows, signs, calming activities, fidgets, coloring books, and so much more. \r\nWhen the students saw the Calm Corner fully put together, they were so happy! We were able to use it as a staple in our Invention of Stories unit, as we analyzed the original Greek myths as compared to the modern adaptation. We created a Camp Half-Blood simulation in which students were assigned to a cabin and could earn points for work completion, meeting expectations, and attending school events together. At the end of reading the book, we watched the Disney Plus adaptation and did more comparing and contrasting, circling back to our unit focus of what inspires people to tell stories. \r\n\r\nThis unit was new to myself and to the students. Although some had already read the book, they were able to take more leadership positions within the classroom by clarifying plot events for other students and reading aloud during class time. I would not have been able to provide this opportunity to have an enjoyable, relevant, and engaging start to the year without the help of your donations. It also helped me show them why we have seasons! \r\nThe students were begging to use the model whenever they were stuck on certain questions or concepts, and because we had such an easy model to use, their understanding and comprehension increased significantly. \r\nThank you again!
