With The Martian and Mockingjay, we focused on key literacy skills such as analyzing character decisions under pressure, tracking how themes develop across a text, and using evidence to support thinking in both discussion and writing. Students explored problem-solving through Mark Watney's scientific thinking and debated complex moral choices faced by Katniss Everdeen, pushing them to think beyond the surface of the story.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom became active and collaborative. Students annotated key moments, participated in small-group and whole-class discussions, and engaged in Socratic seminars where they built on each other's ideas. You could hear students asking questions, challenging perspectives, and even laughing at moments in The Martian that made the science feel approachable and fun. Many students who typically struggle to stay engaged were eager to read ahead and come to class ready to talk about what happened next.\r\n\r\nSeveral students stood out in their enthusiasm. One student who rarely participated began volunteering insights about survival strategies and character choices, while another who had never finished a full novel proudly shared that this was the first book they couldn't put down. These moments are why access to the right books matters. Your support helped create a classroom where reading felt meaningful, exciting, and worth talking about—and that impact will last far beyond this unit.","fullyFundedDate":1770715169548,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-current-novels-for-middle-scho/10083862/","projectTitle":"Engaging, Current Novels for Middle Schoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kay","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6160149_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778789532327","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6160149"},{"teacherId":9896825,"projectId":9675620,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. The classroom sets of books, including Hidden Figures: Young Readers' Edition along with the headphones and other class sets, are already making a real difference for our seventh-grade readers. Having enough books for everyone means students can read along together, participate fully in discussions, and stay engaged with the text. The headphones are also incredibly helpful, allowing students to listen to audiobooks and other resources while following along in their own copy.\r\n\r\nAs we read together, students are especially interested in the stories of the human computers at Langley and their work with NASA. The students have already benefited tremendously from the resources you helped provide. \r\n\r\nThe headphones, in particular, have made a significant impact in our classroom. Students use them almost every day for a variety of assignments- everything from interactive lessons to independent reading activities. They've also been invaluable as noise-canceling tools, helping students focus in a busy classroom environment and giving them the quiet space they need to do their best work. \r\n\r\nWe also appreciate your patience and assistance as the district worked through the long process of installing the printer on their system. It took several months for everything to be fully set up, but once it was finally completed, the students were thrilled to put it to use. Just this past week, they were able to print our colored maps for their geography work. and having clear, vibrant visuals made the learning experience much more engaging. \r\n\r\nThank you again for making these opportunities possible for our students.
