Middle School can be a tough time for kids. They are working to find their niche in school and how they fit in. We are adding a gaming team to CMS this year to give the students more options to get involved. There is nothing else like this in the area or on the western slope as far as we know so we are blazing new trails for middle schoolers. Eventually we will grow from a small team at CMS to having teams in other area middle schools to compete with. Kids love playing video games, it's a simple truth. In the past this was looked at as a waste of time and energy. Not any more. Around the US and around the world, eSports is becoming a huge attraction. Fans will watch their favorite players, teams and games as they compete for titles, prizes and money. Many of the top level competitors have professional contracts to play their game! Some colleges are even offering scholarships to gamers to play on their college team or club! That's right, you can pay for college by playing video games! So how does all this impact our students at CMS? Not everyone wants to play sports. Not everyone is able to play sports. Some kids don't want to be in choir or band, it's just not their passion. A critical component of the middle school experience is to find somewhere you fit, an activity to be part of, a team to join and to make friends. Our eSports team has already given almost 20 students this opportunity and now we need to upgrade our controllers to continue growing and progressing. Using a keyboard and mouse is okay, but this will allow the kids to go to the next level.
