Instead of simply reading about science, they have been able to touch, test, observe, make predictions, and discover answers for themselves using the materials you supplied through your generous donations! The magnetism materials have allowed students to investigate attraction and repulsion and test which everyday materials are magnetic. Watching them make predictions, test their ideas, and excitedly share their discoveries has been a wonderful reminder of how powerful hands-on learning can be.\r\n\r\nWe are also using the resources to build authentic scientific skills. Students are learning to make hypotheses, carefully observe what happens, collect evidence, and use their observations to explain their thinking. The biological growth materials have been especially exciting because they give students the chance to approach a question like real scientists—making a prediction, collecting data over time, and looking for patterns in their results.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue using these materials as we explore sound, magnetism, and biological science. Students will investigate how vibrations create sound and explore how changes in vibrations affect what they hear and observe. They will continue practicing the scientific process by asking questions, designing investigations, recording observations, and using evidence to support their conclusions.\r\n\r\nYour support has done more than provide supplies—it has helped create a classroom where students can be curious, ask questions, take risks, and see themselves as capable scientists. The excitement in the classroom was palpable, and it sparked a lot of curiosity about composting and the important role worms play in our ecosystem. \r\n\r\nThe students have taken great care of their squirmy companions. They have diligently been keeping the soil moist, feeding them vegetable scraps, and even enjoying the feeling of holding these fascinating little creatures. It's wonderful to see how this hands-on experience has allowed them to connect with nature in a way many had never experienced before.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the practical aspects of caring for our worms, students have also engaged in reading about composting and the life cycle of worms. They have been incredibly enthusiastic about learning how these tiny creatures transform food waste into nutrient-rich compost, which we plan to use in our classroom garden.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps include integrating what they've learned into a larger garden project. We will be using the compost produced by our worm friends to nourish the plants we will be growing together. One of our favorite recent projects was our \"Invisible World\" investigation. Students collected swabs from surfaces throughout the classroom and school and grew bacteria and fungi in Petri dishes. They were always so excited to check for new growth, compare results, and talk like real scientists—using words like observe, compare, and hypothesize with so much pride. This project sparked so many curious questions and helped students understand that science is something they can actively explore, not just read about.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the boxes of new science tools and materials, their faces lit up. There were wide eyes, excited questions like \"Are we doing a real experiment today?!\" Many students started naming the tools they recognized and asking about those they didn't, and couldn't wait to use them. They were thrilled to work with \"real scientist materials,\" and the excitement still has not worn off.\r\n\r\nWe are currently preparing for our upcoming unit on ecosystems and food chains, where students will be dissecting owl pellets to discover what predators eat. The resources you provided will help us examine bones closely, compare findings, and create simple models of food chains based on our discoveries. After that, we'll move into earth science activities, including creating clouds, simulating weather patterns, and exploring erosion.
