This year, one of the nine students in the class used AAC devices to communicate because they are minimally verbal. Before receiving this iPad, the student rarely used their devices, unless they were instructed. They associated the device with work, not a tool for communication. \r\nAs the school speech therapist, I try to support the staff in making AAC a part of the classroom routine, but the teacher and teaching assistants struggled to encourage the student to use it, because they didn't feel confident themselves! \r\n\r\nThe iPad you generously donated was loaded with a communication software and became the \"classroom talker.\" Having a second device dedicated to the classroom has made a big difference! Staff members have been able to explore the program and troubleshoot without taking a student's personal device. The teacher has been able to use the classroom iPad while prepping lessons so that he can create opportunities for the students to use their devices. The adults are able to have AAC-mediated conversations with the student where they can model language. As a result, AAC has become a more natural part of daily routines and a tool for instruction.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment occurred when a classmate (non-AAC user) picked up the classroom iPad and began exploring it alongside one of the students using his own AAC device. They were simply playing and discovering together, but it was exciting to see the student eagerly bring his talker into an interaction with a peer and enjoy using his device. The classroom talker has helped increase interest in AAC for both students and adults, creating more opportunities for communication and connection.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make these experiences possible. Your generosity has supported not only access to communication tools, but also greater confidence and engagement for the students and staff who use them every day.
