These books are perfect because they match my students' reading levels but also include topics they love—like sports, animals, and adventure stories. For example, last week, we read a high-interest book about extreme weather. Students practiced breaking down tricky words while learning cool facts about tornadoes. One student said, \"I didn't know I could read a science book by myself!\" It's helping them build fluency and confidence.\r\n\r\nWhen I handed out the books, my students immediately flipped through the pages. One shouted, \"These aren't baby books—they're about real stuff!\" Another student grinned and said, \"I want the shark one first!\" They were excited to see characters and topics that felt relatable, like soccer stories or mysteries. For many, it was the first time they felt proud to read out loud without struggling.\r\n\r\nNext, students will choose their own decodable books to read independently and then create a short comic strip or poster to retell the story. This helps them practice comprehension and creativity. We'll also start \"book talks\" where they recommend favorites to classmates. These steps will keep them excited about reading while growing their skills. With your support, my students are finally seeing themselves as strong readers—and that's a game-changer.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students books that let them say, \"I can read this!\" Your generosity is helping them unlock the joy of reading, one decodable at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1735669811343,"projectUrl":"project/support-7th-grade-students-in-their-read/8772100/","projectTitle":"Support 7th Grade Students in Their Reading Journey","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Allison","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4240390_orig.jpg?crop=240,240,x0,y7&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1728580734097","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4240390"},{"teacherId":7283139,"projectId":8843044,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating these much needed supplies. With your gift, we were able to purchase enough high quality headphones to support all students in reading, science and social studies classes. In addition to providing an instructional tool for students at grade level, headphone also provide access to the large percentage of students at Kepner Beacon whose first language is not English as well as those with learning disabilities. \r\n\r\nHeadphones are crucial to supporting our students in accessing grade level content. This is especially true for students whose first language is not English. Kepner Beacon is a TNLY school and, as such, serves students that are new to the United States. As you may be aware, an unprecedented number of families have recently immigrated to Denver. We welcome these new citizens, but it is a challenge to provide them a meaningful education when many teachers, myself included, do not speak their first language. Luckily, technology has been helping us bridge this gap. While students are learning English, they are also able to access grade level content, including books, video, and articles, in their first language. This access is critical to ensuring that \"newcomer\" students don't fall behind their peers in content knowledge while they make strides in acquiring English.\r\n\r\nHeadphones are also essential in ensuring access for our students with learning disabilities. Approximately 13% of Kepner Beacon students have a recognized literacy based disability. Our students are able to I-Station (a self-paced, interactive platform targeting reading skills), SORA (an online library with thousands of titles), and Newsela (an online database with hundreds of articles). These applications require headphones for a couple different reasons. Firstly, in order for the student to focus on a program such as I-Station, it is necessary for them to hear their computer and not those of the other 29 students in the room. Secondly, SORA, Newsela, and other online sources have read aloud options. If an article or novel is being taught and the reading level is above the student's current independent reading level, the read aloud function provides a access point for that student.\r\n\r\nAgain, on behalf of teachers and students at Kepner Beacon, thank you for your donation and your commitment to educating all students.","fullyFundedDate":1727462656408,"projectUrl":"project/access-to-education-for-all-students/8578272/","projectTitle":"Access to Education for All Students!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Fuller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7283139_orig.jpg?crop=2368,2368,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723052903714","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7283139"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_123332","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":467,"numTeachers":20,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"23.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.4,"schoolId":123332,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kepner Beacon Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kepner Beacon Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/denver-public-school-district-1/kepner-beacon-middle-school/123332"}
