These new texts have helped us introduce important reading skills such as analyzing an author's purpose, comparing different cultural perspectives, and making connections between personal experiences and the stories we read. Students are not only practicing comprehension strategies, but they're also developing empathy, confidence, and a love of reading.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading looks joyful and engaging. Students often curl up with a book that feels like it was written just for them. Independent reading time has become one of the most anticipated parts of the day, and the excitement spills over into class discussions where students bring their own backgrounds and insights into the conversation.\r\n\r\nSome of the most powerful moments have come from students who are new to the United States. One student lit up when she found a novel that featured a character who spoke her native language at home—something she had never seen in a school text before. Another student who had struggled with reading stamina now regularly finishes books cover to cover because he finally sees himself reflected in the stories.\r\n\r\nYour support has truly transformed the way my students experience reading. You've given them not just books, but mirrors of their identities and windows into the lives of others.","fullyFundedDate":1696604160676,"projectUrl":"project/diversidad-en-nuestros-libros/7881581/","projectTitle":"Diversidad en Nuestros Libros","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Restrepo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2386664_orig.jpg?crop=1170,1170,x0,y3&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692930920743","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2386664"},{"teacherId":7822204,"projectId":8815369,"letterContent":"Your support of my engagement in the Breathe for Change Mindfulness, Social Emotional Learning, and Yoga Training for Educators shifted the way I teach to better support student development, and built my confidence to share these skills with colleagues. I learned strategies for improved self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationships skills, and responsible decision making through meditation, self reflection, breathing and yoga practices. This in turn affected the way I respond and connect to students, and provided the tools to model and teach students strategies to help them to be more self- and socially-aware, how to self manage big emotions, make responsible decisions, and enhance relationship skills.\r\n\r\nSome examples of how this training impacted students include:\r\n-Beginning and ending class with various mindful breathing practices to self regulate, identify emotions, and set intentions for the class\r\n-Using breathing or yoga techniques before transitioning to a new activity to help calm the body and mind, focus, and prepare for what's next\r\n-Implementing partner and community mindful movements to increase peer engagement and relationship building\r\n-Implementing non-violent communication by practicing the phrase \"I feel... when you... because... Next time, I would like you to...\" to help students communicate their emotions and solve problems productively on their own\r\n\r\nYour support of my personal development improved my teaching practices and enhanced student social emotional development. This increased productive academic time and positive peer interactions, while building stronger connections between mind and body through breath and movement. These practices were also shared with other educators, creating a ripple effect of positive change. You helped to fund our project \"Shaping Children's Education With Clay!\" \r\n\r\nThe students were overjoyed to work with it, first following an assignment to learn some techniques, then following their own vision. Some student found their artistic language. For some it is paint, others drawing, and for some it is clay and building. To see a student's eyes light up when they discover a medium that somehow speaks to them more than the others is wonderful. \r\n\r\nArt materials are expensive, and in a school of over 400 students, they are eaten up as termites chew through wood.
