I can't describe how these books were received by our very tired, ready-for-summer students. They absolutely loved these books!\r\n\r\nOne reading intervention group had just finished practicing silent e words: reading word lists, then spelling them and finally reading short connected passages. I presented them with the Moon Dog CVe story book series, containing vibrant illustrations and cool characters. Since I only had one copy, we shared the book on a document camera. What fun! They even stayed over their allotted reading session time to finish one of the books! Some came back and read the books on their own. Each book in the series focuses on one spelling pattern, reviewed at the beginning of the book, which is very helpful when the students are still in the acquisition phase.\r\n\r\nPat and Pals, Hot Chips, Mad Fish and Other Tales was especially well-received by an older student who was reading short vowel sounds with blends and digraphs. The story and illustrations in this graphic novel were so much preferred over her regular phonics book that she worked super hard with her lesson so that we had ample time to finish her time reading this particular Pat and Pals book. She was motivated to finish each chapter.\r\n\r\nThe Yak Pack Comics and Phonics books, which also focus on specific skills, was a favorite of some of my students. Even if slightly above the reading level of a book, they were drawn to the hilarious animals and playful speech bubbles, and they wanted to read each and every one of the the four books.\r\n\r\nThis collection of graphic novels and Phonics Books series will be a valuable and popular addition to our classroom library of decodable books.
