I really did not think that it would be funded, and I started to wonder what I should do to try to get the materials that I know I needed. Then, I got an incredible notification that the project WAS funded- wow!! I teared up with so many emotions. I really cannot express what a special experience it was and the hope that it imparted upon me. \r\n\r\nWe have received the majority of the items (a few are on backorder) and the students were beyond happy! Since I cannot capture how they feel better than they can, I got out a notebook and started writing what they said as we opened up the packages. Here are some of the things they said (all direct quotes): \r\n\r\n-Look at this! \r\n-I want to play with this everyday. \r\n-Bro, I need my colors! \r\n-Here you go.\r\n-I'm making all emotions right now: smiley face, sad face, angry face, evil face, excited face. (this is a student using one of the items with emotions in it who struggles with identifying emotions. I was shocked she said this completely independently). \r\n-Look at the magnets! \r\n-You made rings! I want to make rings. \r\n-Dr. M, look at this!!! \r\n-I like the charms. You should get some more for the boys. \r\n-Do you want to know my favorite charms? These three. \r\n- If my mom got me these I would go crazy for them, like this! (He then proceeded to get up and dance around). \r\n-OMG! Thank you so much! \r\n-It's so fun! Look at this! \r\n-Yay! Look at me. I can do this. \r\n-You love to make us happy? \r\n\r\nAs you can see, these incredible gifts you provided us brought much excitement and conversation, and will be valued and treasured for years to come. The gifts also allowed us the chance to talk about giving and volunteering, and what donating means. I was really pleased to see how the materials brought us all together, and how the students were naturally sharing and engaging in collaborative play, as well as talking to one another without me intervening- definitely NOT something I see everyday. \r\n\r\nThe best quote that I would like to share, which I think really sums up everything I am trying to say came from a second grade boy: Tell them thank you so much for the donation. Everyone is being so nice to us! \r\n\r\nThank you, dear donors, for being so nice to us and showing us that people, strangers, actually do care! My students are fully enjoying the snacks, prizes, roulette, and the scratchers. I have created the scratchers with various prizes that's doubled the actual prize such as raffle tickets, Bayview bucks, candy, spin the roulette, and much more. I offer various ways to give the students rewards. On the roulette, I have also included the same prizes as the scratcher but less quantity of the prize. \r\n\r\nMy students first reaction when they saw all the amazing prizes, snacks, and roulette was shouting of enjoyment. As I showed them each item, they were super excited. They kept saying 'I like that prize' and 'You're the best teacher ever'. When they have the chance to get a scratcher or spin the roulette, they get excited to get a cool prize. \r\nStudents will need to continue doing good at school, behaving, and following all classroom expectations. My students really enjoyed seeing all the new classroom materials. The cleaning materials are used on a daily basis to wipe down and disinfect the tables. We are big on doing art, which means we use the crayons and markers for all our projects. All my students are able to gave new pencils and erasers to use on their daily education. One of our first projects we used the crayons and markers was our New Year resolution projects. Having the appropriate materials allow students to learn more. Getting the donations does make a bigger impact on students. \r\n\tWhen the first time the students saw the new material, they all yelled with excitement. They all thanked me for getting them the material but I told them that generous people donated to our project to get all the necessary material needed. I didn't want to get all the credit. They will continue to use proper materials to do their work but overall take good care of everything. They have learned how to value their classroom material.
