Singing brings smiles. Karaoke has made our after school program brighter.\r\n\r\nYesterday, a student shared that she used to be in drama at her previous school. She shared that she loved to sing. I suggested that we get her friends together and sing with the karaoke machine after school. She called her Mom and said don't pick me up until 3:30.\r\n\r\nWe set up the machine. We showed the students our Karaoke CD's. Any song not on these CDs, we can find on the Internet and connect via Bluetooth. \r\n\r\nThe singing and happiness was contagious. Who cares, really, if we aren't singing perfectly? Students and 3 staff members sang. We applauded after each performer sang. We were each others back up dancers. For moodier songs, we were the captive audience. Students asked, when can we do this again? I replied, you or we can do this any day & every day after school. We all left for home happier and with smiles.\r\n\r\nOur last song was \"Summer Lovin'\" from Grease. Many students rushed for the microphones. We took turns singing the main parts and all chimed in for the chorus. I'm smiling writing this as this will be an epic memory for me.\r\n\r\n** I realized that a few of the songs I have been singing, I have been singing the lyrics incorrectly. Your support is more than just a gift of books—it is an investment in equity, representation, and transformation for students who have too often been overlooked in traditional academic settings.\r\n\r\nMy students are continuation learners—young people who have faced barriers in education, whether through systemic challenges, personal hardships, or earlier academic struggles. For them, reading is not always associated with joy or discovery. But when they encounter stories that reflect their lives, cultures, voices, and identities, something powerful happens: they begin to see themselves not only as readers, but as thinkers, storytellers, and lifelong learners.\r\n\r\nYour donation has helped us build a library that honors those identities. You helped us add novels by authors of color, LGBTQ+ voices, and writers who speak to the nuanced realities of youth navigating the margins. These books open doors for our students—doors to empathy, resilience, imagination, and academic confidence. For some, it's the first time they've voluntarily finished a book. For others, it's the first time they've seen their lived experience represented with dignity.\r\n\r\nAs an educator committed to lifelong reading and book love, I want you to know that your support fuels my mission to create equitable opportunities in every corner of my classroom.
