My students deserve ready access to engaging, relevant books to help them grow as lifelong learners and readers. Most of my readers are reading at least 2 grade levels below where they should be reading. To catch up, these students need to read. According to Adams, M. J. (2006), "adding just ten minutes of daily book reading can dramatically increase a student's exposure to print. For example, a student at the 30th percentile who spends an extra ten minutes a day on book reading will read around 700,000 words each year, surpassing the amount of reading currently done by students at the 70th percentile." Providing access to engaging, culturally relevant novels in my classroom is the most effective way to inspire my kids to be readers. Having a classroom library eliminates timely trips to the library and makes books a readily available, normalized part of even reluctant readers' daily lives.
