Students used brush and ink to create their own plum blossom paintings while learning that plum blossoms are an important symbol in Chinese culture, often connected with strength, hope, and perseverance. It was lovely to see students making connections between the art, the season, and the cultural meaning behind it.\r\nOur next steps are to continue building on this learning by connecting Chinese art, poetry, and seasonal traditions. Students are able to quickly sharpen pencils, correct mistakes, and continue working without interruption, which helps maintain the flow of lessons and creative work. \r\n\r\nStudents can use the colored pens for editing, note-taking, reflections, and highlighting important ideas in their work. The Post-it notes are used throughout the day for quick written responses, marking pages in readers, leaving thoughts during discussions, and organizing ideas during writing and project work. These small materials give encouraged engagement and active participation, especially for students who benefit from interactive and hands-on learning strategies.\r\n\r\nIn addition, many of the art and handwork materials are supporting creativity, fine motor development, and careful craftsmanship within the classroom. That's where your donations came in! \r\n\r\nFrom printing supplies, charcoal pencils, chalk pastels, and solar prints (which we haven't even gotten to yet!) the year has been chock full of amazing projects. One of my favorites was telling the tale of Maushop gathering whales for the Wampanoag people and then having the students illustrate the story using chalk pastels on black paper. The results were bright and eye catching. Some items even continued on with us into the fifth grade, like our bookshelf and bells. \r\nOur year kicked off with a study of the Vikings and a performance for the school in which we all needed to create our shields and don some furs (faux, of course!) The creation of their shields required research into how to write their names with Norse Runes, using our ropes to lay out complicated knot designs they wanted to draw, and deciding upon a symbol to represent themselves. The result was a powerful group of Vikings ready to storm the school at our Festival of Courage. \r\nThank you for your donations to make projects like this a possibility.
