Our third grade curriculum invites students to develop a deep connection to the earth and to explore how to thrive on it. We strive to help children feel that they can make their way in the world using their own two hands (and, of course, that clever head and compassionate heart)! The beloved farm-stay field trip in third grade is something the students look forward to for years and will never forget. LivePower Community Farm has been hosting students for decades and immersing them in all aspects of farm life. Their goal is to "...help them encounter and begin to form a relationship with the earth’s life , as expressed by the many different plants and animals that constitute the farm, and to afford them an opportunity to develop hands-on skills that give them a sense of the meaning of practical, productive work." My students will have the opportunity to plow with horses, shear a sheep, sow seeds, harvest potatoes, scythe grass, milk cows, and make butter to name just a few activities! The students leave more empowered and with a feeling that they can accomplish ANYTHING! The classes also walk away with the deep knowledge that they are a team and can depend on one another in the years to come. We have been fundraising as a class for years and have already set aside some funding for this trip. We are asking for partial funding through Donors Choose to help us meet our monumental goal of taking our class on this fantastic 4-day, 3-night farm stay trip.
