This cozy seating has replaced the outdated plastic chairs that we have utilized for more than five years. I would not have been able to purchase these chairs within the constraints of my annual teacher budget. Therefore, your contribution is truly remarkable. The students are enthusiastic about partner reading, and with this new seating arrangement, their excitement has increased significantly, making them much more at ease. They are delighted with the new alternative chairs for partner reading! The cubes are bright colors and have easy to read fractions, decimals, and percentages. I let them explore the cubes for a couple of minutes before starting the lesson. They couldn't help but take them apart and make things with them!\r\n\r\nWe are reviewing the basics of fractions. The hardest concept to understand is that the larger the denominator (the bottom number in a fractions) the smaller the fraction is. The linking cubes give the students that visual understanding since the cubes get smaller. We worked on finding a common denominators in order to add fractions. Students want to add the denominators together which doesn't work. Having students attached the fraction pieces to prove their answers to 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5 gave them immediate feedback that adding denominators doesn't work. I didn't have to tell them, they figured it out!\r\n\r\nFractions are the basis for ratios and a critically important to understand. The quality of writing in these books is exceptional, and I have always been an admirer of High Noon Books. The Little Sprouts series has already proven to be a favorite among my emerging readers, thanks in part to its stunning graphics. \r\n\r\nI have integrated these books into my weekly lesson plans. While adhering to the established curriculum, I dedicate Thursdays to the Little Sprouts Series, where students engage in guided reading with me at the table. Following this, they have the opportunity to choose their seating within the classroom and read alongside a partner which they love to do!\r\n\r\nThere is nothing more fulfilling than observing students pair up, settle into a comfortable space, and share the experience of reading together. Two classes got to try out these kits and they had a blast. They were so excited to dig in, and future classes are already excited about their turns.\r\n\r\nStudents spent two months using these kits to get hands-on engineering experience with the design process. We first explored the built-in curriculum to teach students the basics of block coding. Then students got to try out their creativity by meeting design challenges. Finally, their last project was to be as creative as possible and come up with their invention.\r\n\r\nThese kits will be used by fifth-grade students as a cornerstone project moving forward.
