We've turned a corner of our room into a \"Brain Break Corner,\" where students can curl up with a good book or work quietly in a relaxed space.\r\n\r\nThe first time my students saw the bean bags, their faces lit up with excitement. Many of them immediately sank into them, grabbed their Chromebook, and whispered, \"This feels like home!\" One of my students, who often struggles to sleep at home she stayed in the bean bag for the entire first and second period because she instantly fell asleep. \r\n\r\nWe've already been using the bean bags during small-group reading and writing activities, and they've made our classroom feel more welcoming and less intimidating for students who sometimes need extra comfort to feel ready to learn.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just provide furniture; it created a space where my students feel safe, focused, and inspired. Some students came to school late and missed the free breakfast. Without nutrition, they cannot concentrate or become restless trying to hide the rumbling sounds from their stomachs ( I heard from the students). The students wrote:\" I start sleeping through the test if I don't have anything to eat,\" and \"The nutrition bars allowed me to continue the day without an upset stomach. The juice provided has allowed me to stay energized for the rest of the day.\"\r\n\r\nThe highlighters the students and I used have made the lecture clearer, more organized, and more beneficial for English learners. The students have also learned to color-code their notes to help them study and review for tests. Students were so excited about the chairs and noticed them immediately. Students use them every day. The chairs are comforting and make students feel more relaxed in stressful times. They are supplemental resources that I can use in my classroom to help students process their emotions and find solutions for dealing with stress. I am also conducting a staff development for other teachers on how to create a compassionate classroom. I will use these resources to help present information to other teachers. In that way, your generous gift will not only help my students but others as well.\r\nLastly, thank you for the stickers and notes. I use these to give to students when they are experiencing stress or having upsetting days. Students felt a new sense of calm taking finals this fall with the lighting in place. Visitors to our classroom also note about how warm and calm our space feels now. \r\n\r\nStudents have also enjoyed accessing the mental health motivation, self-help, and strategy books on the new cart in our calm corner. Motivational stickers and calm strips are also a student favorite. Just above the cart are the Social Emotional Learning posters which I selected as part of our grant. As an insentive to get students to access the cart, I have also places some \"free\" pencils for students. \r\n\r\nThe biggest take away from this experience is that our students feel \"seen\" by a community beyond our school. Knowing that others helped to improve our learning environment is powerful.
