They help my students stay focused, engaged, and ready to learn throughout the day. At another center, a group worked together with the magnetic cubes to build a stable tower, testing and adjusting their design when it tipped over. The new storage bins have helped keep these materials organized and easy for students to access independently.\r\n\r\nAs I first put out the materials, the class was immediately engaged. Several students sat down right away to start building with the magnetic blocks and Brain Flakes. Others opened the Play-Doh and began making letters and numbers. There was a lot of focused, quiet excitement as they tried everything out.\r\n\r\nWe're moving into lessons focused on building and comparing shapes, as well as practicing fine-motor skills. These materials will support small-group math work, STEM challenges, and hands-on exploration during centers. One moment that stood out was watching my ELL students use the teaching tubs to match objects to their beginning sounds, several of them were able to say the sounds independently for the first time, and they were so proud of themselves.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were excited and eager to explore. Many immediately opened the tubs to look at the small objects, naming what they found and trying to match them to letters. We set up a 'shared' classroom in a 'u' shape that teachers can use when they want their class to sit in a circle ('u' shape) for whole class discussions. Having these extra chairs makes it possible to have students sit in groups by just going inside the 'u' shape and sitting on these chairs facing their tablemates. \r\n This allows teachers to have group sizes that vary from activity to activity, instead of having the same students and numbers of students sit together for reading, writing, math, etc., all day long. Not all students are the same level in each subject, and therefore are not in the same group for each subject.
