Having choice in their texts helped them take ownership of the reading process in ways that helped them learn so much about themselves. \r\n\r\nSeveral, in end of year reflections in June and in conversations now that we've returned, have reflected on how much it meant to them to feel reflected in the stories and authors they got to explore, and many reflected that it was the unit in which they felt they grew the most as readers and collaborators. Each week, book club students met with each other to engage in rich student-led analytical discussions about their texts. Many shared that having this ownership and choice made them much more likely to read (and read deeply) because they knew that the book was one they chose and they knew that their book club would be better if they each followed through. Several students noted that this made them get much deeper into their text, and many celebrated having found a new favorite through these book clubs. Some even developed such a passion for their book club book that they convinced friends and other staff to read their book, too!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making it more possible to match each student with a book that lights them up.
