Before your kindness, our ELD 9th-grade English class did not have access to a shared novel set. Because of you, my students now hold real books in their hands, books they can annotate, discuss, and truly experience together.\r\nMany people love reading, but may not always see what goes into teaching a novel. These two texts have opened the door to powerful academic and personal growth for my students. Through Of Mice and Men, students are learning to analyze character development, understand themes such as friendship and resilience, and cite textual evidence to support their thinking. \r\nWith The House on Mango Street, students are exploring vignette structure, voice, and identity. The short, poetic chapters are especially supportive for emerging bilingual students, helping them build confidence while analyzing symbolism and theme. The book invites students to reflect on their own experiences, cultures, and dreams, which makes our discussions deeply meaningful and personal.\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and student-centered. You would see students annotating passages, participating in small group discussions, acting out scenes to build comprehension, and engaging in thoughtful writing responses. We practice reading aloud to build fluency and confidence, and students frequently turn and talk to clarify meaning together. The books have transformed our classroom into a community of readers.\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant to participate are now among the most engaged. One student, who rarely spoke during the first weeks of school, volunteered to read aloud during The House on Mango Street and later shared a personal connection to a vignette about family and belonging. Seeing students connect emotionally and intellectually to literature has been the greatest gift.\r\nYour donation has done more than provide books—it has provided access, equity, and opportunity. You have given my students the chance to see themselves as readers, thinkers, and scholars. For many of them, this is the first time they have been able to read a full novel in an English classroom. That is a powerful milestone.\r\nThank you for believing in our students and for investing in their futures. Your generosity is making a lasting impact at Logan Memorial High School.\r\nWith sincere appreciation,","fullyFundedDate":1769178089540,"projectUrl":"project/a-fresh-start-giving-my-students-the-bo/9879448/","projectTitle":"A Fresh Start: Giving My Students the Books They Deserve","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vargas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10343314_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762489276842","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10343314"},{"teacherId":8956318,"projectId":9673547,"letterContent":"I want to express my deepest gratitude for your generous support of my Donors Choose projected entitled, \"Oh no! I'm Out of Copies! Please Help My Students! Thanks to your contributions, my project was able to reach full funding. My classroom at Logan Memorial Educational Campus (LMEC) now has copy paper, cardstock, more books, and most importantly toner cartridges. At the rate I have been printing things out for my students, I am so incredibly thankful that I am going to get through the school year without worrying about having enough copies. Just today, our copy machines were out of order and I was so thankful that I had my toner cartridges to rely on for a continuum of learning in my classroom. Your support has ensured that our Montessori students have these basic essential materials for learning. \r\nMy students have begun to realize a new found freedom in their learning with the copy paper we have received. I have a student who is interested in possibly becoming a doctor when she grows up so I showed her a book about the human body for kids. With the paper we received from your donations, this student was able to create a replica of the human brain and also provided information about hair. I also had another student create the human heart and even labeled some of the parts of the heart. Both of these students are third graders with lots of ambition. I hope you are able to see pictures of their work because it is truly spectacular. \r\nThe toner for my classroom printer was another one of my biggest needs. I am now fully capable of printing the accompanying worksheets that go along with our phonics, reading, and math curriculum for our Montessori classroom. These worksheets use a lot of paper and ink. I can proudly say that ALL of my students have shown progress in reading and math - the data behind this is positive and exciting. \r\nI want to tell you that I received notification of the full funding for my project just before Christmas, and I want you to know that your contributions brought me to tears. You made my small wishes come true for my students. The basic needs of a classroom such as toner and paper absolutely go a long way for students at LMEC. These resources have allowed students to practice critical thinking, communication, and perseverance in a hands-on and joyful way.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. There were gasps, big smiles, and lots of \"Can we try this one?\" What stood out most was how quickly they transitioned from excitement to focus. We use these snacks as positive incentives during independent work time, group activities, and AVID-focused note-taking sessions. They have helped create a warm and supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged to stay engaged and motivated. One specific moment that stands out was during our reading block: students were working on a challenging chapter of Fish in a Tree, and the snacks provided just the right boost to help them stay focused and enthusiastic about their work. These small treats have made a big difference in helping students push through moments that require extra effort.\r\n\r\nThe students were incredibly excited when they first saw the snacks. Their faces lit up, and many expressed gratitude and surprise that someone outside of our classroom cared enough to support their learning in this way. The snacks have become a simple but powerful reminder that the community believes in their potential and wants them to succeed.\r\n\r\nAs for next steps, our class is currently working on a combination of reading comprehension, writing development, and AVID organizational skills. Students are preparing for their next writing assignment, which focuses on character analysis and making text-based inferences. By reading this novel, students learn to see the importance of storytelling in preserving culture, memory, and identity. The book encourages readers to consider themes like censorship, survival, individuality, and the power of stories in shaping humanity. Through Petra's Mexican heritage and the role of cuentos (stories), students engage with cultural traditions and the significance of oral storytelling. Finally, this text prompts reflection on courage, resistance, and the role of creativity in rebuilding community after loss.\r\nThe Last Cuentista has appealed to many students who enjoy science fiction, fantasy, or stories with strong female protagonists. Students with an interest in culture and storytelling connect with Petra's identity as a cuentista. Others are drawn to the ethical and philosophical questions—such as what makes us human when memory and individuality are threatened. Some reluctant readers have also become more involved because the story's futuristic elements and emotional depth make it accessible yet thought-provoking.","fullyFundedDate":1755719351795,"projectUrl":"project/creating-community-through-reading/9604833/","projectTitle":"Creating Community Through Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Badu-Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4052508"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_37875","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":109,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":94,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"5.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.1,"schoolId":37875,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Logan Memorial Educational Campus on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Logan Memorial Educational Campus","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-diego-unified-school-district/logan-elementary-school/37875"}
