One skyline quickly becomes an invitation to design, create, and imagine a city of their own. They were particularly curious about the golden gate bridge design and the London Eye wheel. Because of you, my students now read together in small groups, and they are excited to do it.\r\n\r\nWhat we're learning. Each Magic Tree House book is a short adventure. Jack and Annie travel to a new time or place, like ancient Egypt, the rain forest, or the deep sea, and solve a problem there. That structure lets me teach several skills at once:\r\n\r\nStudents identify characters, setting, problem, and solution, and track how Jack and Annie change from the beginning of a book to the end. Each book ends its chapters on a cliffhanger, so students stop and ask, \"What do you think will happen next, and what clues in the text made you think that?\" That is the core of reading comprehension: backing up your thinking with evidence. The books introduce new words in context, and the short chapters give students the repeated practice that builds smooth, confident reading. In book studies, students take turns, listen, and respond to each other's ideas, disagreeing politely and using the text to explain why.\r\n\r\nStudents meet in small book-study groups, and each group reads the same title. They read a chapter, then discuss and record their thinking and answers on our book study packet. I circulate, listen in, and coach each group on the skill they need most. Students also get quiet independent reading time with a book they choose. One student who used to not look forward to reading, but now asks if they can work on their book study during any free time they have. I have also noticed an increase in their ability to answer comprehension questions and finding the answers back in the text.\r\n\r\nBecause these books come in a series, finishing one makes students eager to start the next. That kind of motivation is hard to create, and your generosity made it possible. I was able to use the Indi Sphero during summer school and I have already used it in the new school year, and I am so grateful that I could add it to my classroom. Parents have expressed to me that their children are so excited to come, explore, and learn thanks to these wonderful manipulatives.\r\n\r\nDuring summer school, I started the Indi Sphero as a teacher led engineering center. We talked about coding as the language robots speak and the different types of coding we've experienced. When I introduced the Sphero which uses color for coding, the students were so excited to try the different challenges that came with the kit and simply explore what the different colors do. Thanks to the child friendly way that the Sphero is able to operate, I was able to quickly explain how they work, and then leave the students to test and explore by themselves. Their favorite color is the purple, which is the end goal for Sphero and it will spin around and play a fun song. At the beginning of this school year, I was able to use it as a fast finisher activity, and during our Friday Explore times. I am so happy that I am able to give my students the opportunity to explore code independently, and I am so grateful to all of you for helping make our classroom an engaging space for learning.\r\n\r\nOur next steps for our classroom are to gain more LEGO models for inspiration and engineering, as well as story audio cards through Yoto. One memorable moment occurred when a student who was becoming frustrated during a difficult assignment independently chose to use a calming box, practiced some calming strategies, and returned ready to complete their work.
