My students had a blast creating their geometric bridges using parallelograms and similar triangles. The students were more engaged with the mathematics when they saw all of the materials needed for the project from the range of popsicle sticks all the way to the pain markers they would use to decorate and label their bridges. Students were so appreciative of the use of hot glue guns and how durable it made their bridges. If it wasn't for the hot glue guns we would have used Elmer's glue which would have brought more difficulty in constructing the bridges. \r\n\r\nThe students had a deeper understanding of what each of the similar triangles looked like from SAS. AAS. SSS, and ASA. As they were researching the various bridge designs, they were eager to dive deeper on the \"Why.\" Why did the construction of this bridge made it the strongest? If I want to make the bridge longer, why do I need to make sure the durability and the flexibility of a bridge? Why does it take so long in constructing a bridge in real life? As students were researching these questions, and applying them to make their model bridge, it made them engaged with the material compared to if the teacher just gave them a worksheet to work on. Overall, my students enjoyed this project and is now interested in my characteristic of a triangle as well as in the field of architect and construction. Now my students are interested in questioning, are triangles the best shape to construct bridges, or are there better shapes that can be used in the construction of a bridge to make it stronger?
