My students come to me with little to no English and significantly interrupted school experiences. The textbook we use at school is only one resource we use and is woefully inadequate in helping students gain the vocabulary they need to survive and thrive on campus, and in the world off-campus. A picture dictionary is an essential tool for students to tailor their learning to their needs. It has thematic pages with related vocabulary to give them the words they need while they learn to write and read English. Creating these sorts of resources on our own takes valuable time away from planning the complex lessons already required to deliver essential literacy instruction. A class set of these books will last for at least 10 years and will allow us to ground our new arrivals with a sense of understanding and the keys to learning what is a very challenging language, even for those of us who grew up speaking it at home.
