Sex education is an uncomfortable topic to discuss, within many families in my community. Often, cultures insist sex is only for married couples and should, otherwise, be avoided. Teenagers feel scolded for bringing up the topic and do not feel safe talking about it with adults. As a result, teenagers end up minimally educated and have unprotected sex, resulting in teenage pregnancies. According to LA Best Babies Network, 15,000 babies born in Los Angeles county, annually, are born to a teen parents. This accounts for 10% of baby births in Los Angeles. In addition, the birthrate among 15- to 17-year-old Latinas is nearly 12 times higher than the rate among Asians of the same age. The birthrate among 15- to 17-year-old African American teens is 6.5 times higher than among Asian Americans. Providing my students with pregnancy tests will help answer their doubt and allow me to provide them with resources for safe sex and/or parenting education.
