When I first created this project, it was with the motivation and passion to set the building blocks for what will become a larger calming break/sensory area that students can have access to at all times. I continued to notice that there were areas of need that were not being addressed through the schools current resources. The needs of our students are always changing and it's important to continue to grow and change with those needs in order to best support and foster a safe and accessible learning environment. \r\n\r\nAfter opening the packages and establishing the area with the swing, tap sensory lights, sensory mats, and sensory stepping stones, the students were immediately intrigued with what was to come. After some building (and reading directions!), the basics of the area were established! I not only had help from other staff, but also students to rearrange the furniture and materials in the room in order to make space for this very important area. Staff and students had an input as to how the area should be setup. When the students at Hearst first saw the completed calming break area , they were surprised. The layout of the room had changed and it made them curious. The students were encouraged to explore the area and see what was in it.\r\n\r\nI work with a student who learns best when they are provided with a lot of sensory input before learning. One day, I decided to take that student to use that area for 5-10 minutes. We played a proprioceptive/body awareness game using the sensory mats and stepping stones in preparation for some handwriting. This student does not enjoy writing of any kind, but after using the tools in the calming break/sensory area, this student was able to sit down and write for 7 minutes without disruption, which was huge! The next steps for this project are to continue adding tools that multi-sensory learners can access at any time of the school day if needed. I am hoping that this area will continue to grow. Thank you again for all of your support with this project! It has helped so many students this year and will continue to help future students at Hearst!","fullyFundedDate":1740691503899,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-room-project/9076470/","projectTitle":"Sensory Room Project","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Chris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mschrissensoryproject"},{"teacherId":5466649,"projectId":8447308,"letterContent":"I just printed photos of my students from my new color printer.
