Restart by Gordon Korman also sparked important conversations about bullying, empathy, second chances, and personal growth. Many students connected to the idea that words and actions can deeply affect others, and it led to thoughtful discussions about how we treat people at school and in everyday life.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is very interactive. Students annotate, discuss chapters with partners and groups, share predictions, and connect the story to their own lives. Having enough books for every student made a huge difference because everyone could fully participate together.\r\n\r\nSome of my more reluctant readers especially loved this book. I had students who normally avoid reading ask to keep going or get excited to share their theories about the characters. Watching students become more engaged and confident readers throughout the unit was incredibly rewarding.","fullyFundedDate":1771036460687,"projectUrl":"project/preparing-for-middle-school-through-the/10017100/","projectTitle":"Preparing for Middle School Through the Power of Restart","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hernandez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/emhernandez"},{"teacherId":3962809,"projectId":9593332,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and support of our classroom library. Because of your kindness, my students now have access to new books that are engaging, meaningful, and inspiring. Your donation has truly made a difference in our classroom community.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of introducing these new texts has been watching students connect with reading in new ways. Through these books, students are building important literacy skills such as analyzing characters, making inferences, identifying themes, using text evidence to support their thinking, and developing empathy by exploring perspectives different from their own. The stories have sparked thoughtful discussions, deeper comprehension, and a stronger love of reading.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active, collaborative, and student-centered. Students participate in book discussions, partner talks, independent reading, response journals, and creative projects connected to the texts. Many students are becoming more confident readers because they now have books that feel relevant and interesting to them. It has been wonderful to see students recommending books to one another and eagerly asking for more time to read.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were previously hesitant readers have become especially engaged with the new books. Some students have discovered genres they never explored before, while others finally found characters and experiences they can relate to. One of the most rewarding moments as a teacher is hearing students say things like, \"Can I keep reading?\" or \"You pick the best books!\" Those moments are happening more often because of your support.\r\n\r\nThank you again for investing in our students and helping create a classroom where reading is exciting, meaningful, and accessible for everyone. Your generosity is helping build not only stronger readers, but also more curious, thoughtful, and confident learners.","fullyFundedDate":1766771552809,"projectUrl":"project/steps-of-hope-and-resilience/9593332/","projectTitle":"Steps of Hope and Resilience","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Harshman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3962809_orig.png?crop=401,401,x13,y33&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1563507550350","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3962809"},{"teacherId":2486824,"projectId":9650077,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the generous donation of the fidgets for our classroom. Because of you, my class has a brand new alphabet rug, and it has already become the heart of our learning space. When the students first saw it, their faces lit up with excitement—several immediately started pointing out letters they recognized and proudly saying their sounds. We now gather on the rug every day for morning meeting, lessons, and read-alouds. One of my favorite moments is watching students collaborate on the rug during choice time, working together to create cities out of blocks or complete community helper puzzles.\r\n\r\nUsing the alphabet rug, students play movement-based games, practice identifying beginning and ending sounds, and work together on early reading activities. This rug is helping build confidence, cooperation, and a love of learning. I am so grateful that you helped make this possible for my students. Being a Spanish dual-immersion teacher is an immense privilege and a big responsibility to not only teach the language, but to honor the cultures that shape the language. I believe that books are powerful tools that help us understand one another better through stories. I also believe in the power a single book can have in making us feel seen and heard, like when you see someone just like you and suddenly, you are inspired to share those parts of you with the world! These \"mirrors\" are so dear to my heart, and making sure books are offering those experiences to my students is one of my priorities. One of my favorite things with our new books has been seeing a group of my usually reserved students suddenly light up when they learned that the biography they picked up was from a Latina artist that was from Latin America, just like them. They excitedly invited more friends to take a look at the book, and they are all now choosing to use their free time to create their own presentation about singers and artists from Latin America. Seeing a child happily share who they are, where they come from, and the beautiful richness of their lived experience and their family's all thanks to a book is truly priceless.
