Many of my students come to class eager to learn but may not have access to basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, notebooks, and other materials. Students enter my classroom with different academic abilities, personal experiences, emotional needs, and challenges outside of school. In order for meaningful learning to occur, students need to feel safe, supported, valued, and prepared. DonorsChoose projects allow me to create an environment that addresses these needs while maintaining high academic expectations. Whether I am providing hands-on science materials, organizational supplies, or resources that make the classroom more welcoming and engaging, each project gives me another opportunity to meet students where they are and help them develop academically, socially, and emotionally.\r\n\r\nUltimately, DonorsChoose helps me provide my students with more than classroom materials—it helps me provide opportunities. When students do not have to worry about having a pencil or a piece of paper, they can direct their attention toward asking questions, investigating scientific concepts, collaborating with classmates, and developing confidence in their abilities. This is especially important in a school where such a large percentage of students are underrepresented in science. I want my students to see science as a field in which they belong and can succeed.
