My students have been very engaged in this book and felt emotionally drawn to the characters and their stories. Through this process, they realized that there are many in our own community who have similar stories as these characters. It has been a great discussion starter for my classroom as I do my best to humanize immigrants in ways that many of my students have not been exposed to. \r\n\r\nBesides the empathy and humanization of immigrants that this book provides, we did a deep dive into the elements of literature. We used this book to provide analysis on the elements of plot, setting of a story, point of view and perspective, character analysis, figurative language identification, and identifying the novel's main conflicts and the themes we can derive from them. Each issue also includes a debate section that always engages students in heated discussion.\r\nThere are so many uses for Junior Scholastic, I can't wait to introduce my class to all it has to offer.
