In rehearsal, we recently worked on scenes between the Bottom brothers, and for the first time, students were able to rehearse while wearing costume elements that reflected the time period. That shift was powerful—posture changed, physicality became more intentional, and students began making clearer, more grounded character choices. What was once a modern-feeling rehearsal suddenly felt like storytelling rooted in a specific world.\r\n\r\nThese materials are helping us teach not just acting, but historical context and visual storytelling. Students are learning how design supports narrative—how a silhouette, a texture, or a prop can communicate status, profession, and personality before a single line is spoken. Theatre is inherently collaborative, and these resources allow our performers and student designers to work together more authentically.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the reaction was immediate excitement. Students gathered around, eager to try things on, touch fabrics, and imagine themselves in the world of the play.","fullyFundedDate":1770990168153,"projectUrl":"project/bring-something-rotten-to-life-with-rena/10087230/","projectTitle":"Bring Something Rotten to Life with Renaissance Costumes","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Volpi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8233751_orig.png?crop=284,284,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1639177582076","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsvolpi"},{"teacherId":8233751,"projectId":10013396,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our production of Something Rotten! has come to life in ways that truly transformed our classroom and stage.\r\n\r\nWith the addition of our new egg costumes and cooking props, students are not just rehearsing—they are fully immersed in storytelling. In one of our most joyful rehearsal moments, we staged the \"It's Eggs!\" number, a playful, high-energy ensemble scene that relies heavily on visual comedy and commitment. As soon as students put on the egg costumes and picked up whisks and frying pans, everything changed. Movements became bigger, choices became bolder, and suddenly the entire number clicked. Students who were previously hesitant stepped forward with confidence, fully embracing the humor and physicality of the piece.\r\n\r\nThese resources have allowed us to teach ensemble storytelling at a deeper level. Students are learning how props and costumes are not just accessories, but tools that support character, timing, and audience engagement. In a show like Something Rotten!, which thrives on large, comedic ensemble moments and over-the-top theatricality , these materials are essential for helping students understand the full scope of performance.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the reaction was immediate and electric. There were cheers, laughter, and a rush of students volunteering to try everything on. For many of my students—especially those who may not always feel confident onstage—these costumes created a sense of play that lowered their fear and invited them to take risks. It was a reminder that theatre is, at its heart, joyful and collaborative.","fullyFundedDate":1770090132017,"projectUrl":"project/something-rotten-ensemble-needs-egg-cel/10013396/","projectTitle":"Something Rotten! It allows me to model concepts in real time, display interactive visuals, and access a wide range of educational resources that make learning more engaging and accessible. Whether I'm projecting examples, demonstrating problem solving strategies, or guiding students through multimedia content, the iPad helps make instruction clearer and more dynamic for everyone.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is how the iPad transforms our daily lessons into interactive experiences. They are highly engaged when I use it to show videos, annotate texts, or walk through step by step explanations that they can easily follow. The visual and interactive elements capture their attention and help them better understand complex ideas. Even simple features, like zooming in on a text or highlighting key details, make a big difference in keeping students focused and involved.\r\n\r\nVisual learners, in particular, respond well to the clear modeling and multimedia support the iPad provides. Students are more willing to participate when they can clearly see and understand the material being presented. Notably, the unit increased engagement among boys and students who had previously shown low motivation or a pattern of skipping assigned readings. Tim O'Brien's narrative style, thematic focus on war, memory, and truth, and the accessibility of the text encouraged these students to participate more actively in class discussions and complete readings with greater consistency.\r\n\r\nThe unit also resulted in high-quality academic writing. Students enrolled in Higher Level IB Language and Literature produced essays that were thoughtful, analytical, and insightful, demonstrating a strong understanding of literary techniques, authorial choices, and thematic complexity. Many students were able to move beyond summary to engage in nuanced analysis, particularly in their exploration of narrative structure, perspective, and the blurred line between fiction and reality.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, students expressed strong enjoyment of the unit due to its meaningful connection to their IB History coursework. The ability to draw on historical knowledge of the Vietnam War deepened comprehension and enriched discussions, allowing students to synthesize learning across disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach not only strengthened critical thinking skills but also helped students see literature as a powerful lens for understanding historical experiences.\r\n\r\nOverall, The Things They Carried proved to be a highly effective text for fostering engagement, supporting advanced literary analysis, and encouraging meaningful connections between literature and history.","fullyFundedDate":1757690919106,"projectUrl":"project/walking-in-stories-building-in-words/9682394/","projectTitle":"Walking in Stories, Building in Words","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Alden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10021626_orig.jpg?crop=200,200,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746550725658","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10021626"},{"teacherId":8233751,"projectId":9626717,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my students are no longer just learning about costume design—they are becoming costume designers.
