I literally cannot do my job effectively without support from generous people like you! \r\n\r\nWe use markers several times a week, and the kids LOVE picking out their colors and thier eraser, to write on the table-sized whiteboards! \r\n\r\nWe go over the problem together, and then the table group discusses and agrees on a single answer, and they have to justify their answer. Correct table answers, with justification, earn a treat. \r\nNot only does this promote working together and having grade-appropriate content vocabulary, but it also helps them feel stronger when taking a test, as they have become quite successful in their thinking skills. We have been practicing this at least once a week since October! \r\n\r\nHaving colored dry erase markers really takes it to the next level, where they get to pick colors based on their mood. It's fun to watch and see what they will pick week to week. \r\n\r\nColored Xerox paper also has the same effect! Serving 150 6-8th grade students per year, I now have enough looms for each of my 5 class to have a beanie knitting unit. \r\nLeading up to knitting by scaffolding with some other hand stitching projects has definitely helped with some of the complexity of making beanies from scratch. I'm happy to share the excitement on my students faces at the finishing stages of their beanies--which for many includes an optional pom-pom adorning the top--has made every second of complexity worthwhile.\r\nAs with many students of this generation, digital technology has unfortunately become the norm in the classroom, but this project reinforces care, slowness, patience, and the beating human heart of creating handmade objects! \r\nHaving started knitting with just one class so far, all of my other classes are practically begging to make their own beanies! Fortunately each will indeed get their chance in the coming months.
