With the calming corners and privacy dividers in place, my TK–8th graders are using the new resources in real, meaningful ways. The dividers give us discreet micro-spaces for self-regulation and quick therapy moments, so students can pause, breathe, and reset without feeling watched. I've even used the setup during testing and when my assistant is supporting another group—we simply reposition the divider to shield the therapy activity, helping the student stay focused and minimizing disruption for everyone else. A recent example: during a brief therapy moment, a student regulated independently in the corner and returned to a collaborative task with renewed focus and confidence.\r\n\r\nThe response from students has been wonderful—they loved the spaces and thought they were \"so cool.\" Looking ahead, we're planning a holiday activity: an Ugly Sweater design competition. I'll share a blank sweater page and guide students to design what their dream \"ugly\" sweater would be. The SPED teacher will select 3–4 winners across age groups, with one winner chosen from each group. Students will write down 3 things they'd like from a small prize, and I'll try to fulfill at least one of those for the winners. This activity supports creativity, language skills, fine motor development, and community spirit. Thank you again for making this possible—their well-being and learning are brighter because of you.","fullyFundedDate":1755731897869,"projectUrl":"project/privacy-first-dividers-creating-calm-mi/9569071/","projectTitle":"Privacy-First Dividers: Creating Calm Micro-Spaces for Dysregulation and Re-Regulation","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Singh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10092802_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755039456156","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10092802"},{"teacherId":10092802,"projectId":9498868,"letterContent":"My students and I have already begun using the new resources, and the impact has been immediate. One powerful moment happened with a younger student who struggles with emotional regulation. Our session was ending and she became upset because her project wasn't finished yet. In past years, moments like this would lead her to elope and run all the way across campus back to her classroom. This time, instead of running out of the room, she went straight to our new calming corner. She curled up on the beanbag, used the light-up penguin for breathing, and held the expanding ball to help her regulate. It was a huge moment of growth for her—she stayed safely in the room and used the funded materials independently to calm her body.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the calming corner, they were instantly excited. Since my typical therapy materials are kept behind closed cupboards, having the calming tools displayed in open cubbies created what students now call \"the cool spot\" of my room. They love that it's cozy, visible, and always available when they need it. Looking ahead, I see students continuing to use these materials both as a reward for working hard at the end of their session and as a true calm-down space when they need support regulating. With the holidays approaching, we'll also be doing our annual ugly sweater contest and a small celebration with our neighboring special education class. These moments of connection and joy mean so much to our students, and having a space that feels safe, inviting, and supportive makes all the difference in helping them show up as their best selves.\r\n\r\nThank you again for generously funding this project. Usually, my class would start with a picture of a bunch of kids staring blankly at a whiteboard full of numbers and letters (also known as math), and the students were totally lost. But this past trimester, something kind of cool happened when I broke out the Hands On Equations sets. These manipulatives have been a game-changer. Instead of just seeing letters and numbers, the kids got to use these little pawns and cubes to actually \"build\" the equations. \r\n As simple as pawns and cubes sounds, it was these hands on manipulatives that helped them see the abstract variables and grasp a better understanding of how algebra really works. Kids who used to be super nervous about even trying to solve problems are now, like, fighting to get to answer first. It's been amazing to see them go from being intimidated to actually being excited to show me their answer and then go to the board to show the class. \r\n Students have increased their skill level, confidence level, and the engagement in my class overall has increased. The best moments are those dialogues that I overhear when a student who typically would remain silent, helps another student with a problem.
