When asked what they would like to be when they "grow up" my students' answers vary from working at Taco Bell and wanting to work at the local Walmart. My goal is to show them through engineering and design projects (like robotics), they create themselves, that there are other opportunities out there for them. Currently I have 30 sweet, wonderful & curious students. Coming from a very low socioeconomic area (98% free and reduced lunch), my students have limited opportunities. Most hurry home after school to watch a sibling and parents often work 1-2 jobs. If successful, my students' favorite subjects would be science and math. They would dream of becoming engineers, scientists, computer programmers, architects, etc. Hopefully, this will create an awareness and need for college. I want these wonderful people to know that there is so much more out there for them and that they can be anything that they dream to be.
