It's been amazing to have some new exciting toys for my most impacted students. The singing cactus has been a huge hit. It's a favorite of one of complex communicators and we have been using it to practice her yes/response. I always get a big smile when the cactus starts to sing and dance. \r\n\r\nAnother one of my students is working on her speech and including the final sounds in short words. She loves the bird that moves around and it was been very motivating for her to practice the word \"on\" and include that final \"n\" sound. \r\n\r\nProbably my biggest sucess story with these new materials has been one of my kiddos who is in a wheelchair and is nonspeaking. We have been practicing using an eye gaze device (where he uses his eyes to select icons on a screen). He recently had a trial where he had to use the eye gaze device in front of some professionals and then they decide if he qualifies to get a permanent device or not. He was so distracted at first with all the new people that he wasn't using the eye gaze device. I used the spinning light toy up to help direct his attention to the screen and then he was able to show off his skills. We found out a couple weeks ago that the panel approved him for his own dedicated device, which is going to be such a life changer for him to have a way to communicate. \r\n\r\nNeedless to say having new exciting materials makes my job a lot easier and makes things a lot more fun for my students that have lots of communication challenges. Thank you so much for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1740509186250,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-toys-to-help-students-build-com/9063272/","projectTitle":"Engaging Toys to Help Students Build Communication","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Marie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5710060_orig.jpg?crop=1330,1330,x311,y95&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1619472213664","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5710060"},{"teacherId":23518,"projectId":8821036,"letterContent":"We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous support in helping us bring new books into our classroom for students with severe disabilities. Your kindness has made a significant and lasting impact—not just by adding to our shelves, but by opening doors to learning, communication, and joy that many of our students had never experienced before.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom might look different than in others, but it is just as powerful. For some of our students, reading means engaging with textures, colors, and images through adaptive books. For others, it's listening to stories read aloud while using communication devices to express their thoughts or reactions. Many are building foundational skills such as identifying characters, expressing preferences, making choices, and attending to a story from beginning to end.\r\n\r\nThese new books have allowed us to introduce essential early literacy skills, like tracking text, recognizing symbols, and making connections between pictures and words. They've also sparked conversations—some verbal, some through assistive technology—about emotions, characters, and events. These are huge steps for students who are still learning to communicate in their own unique ways.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, Jayden, has discovered a love for interactive books with flaps and textures. He lights up every time we bring out his favorite story and now anticipates the storytime routine each day. Another student, Mia, who uses a communication device, has started using new vocabulary she learned from a story about animals. These are not small moments—they are breakthroughs.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our classroom is now a space where more students feel connected, engaged, and seen through stories. You've helped us create meaningful opportunities for learning and joy that simply wouldn't have been possible otherwise.","fullyFundedDate":1728672480656,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-learning/8821036/","projectTitle":"Books for Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kemper","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp23518_orig.jpg?crop=418,418,x0,y75&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1661289440276","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/23518"},{"teacherId":4907206,"projectId":8937088,"letterContent":"Having flexible seating has been invaluable for my students.
