And a special thank you to the Sonic Foundation for matching all donations!\r\n\r\nWe used the two large parachutes for team-building activities. My PE students (~270 6-8th graders) did the umbrella, color switch, big slow waves, small fast waves, popcorn, and their two favorite, the mushroom and the rocket launch (work together to make the ball hit the ceiling). If they leveled up to the final boss in our Scramble activity they got to use the reaction balls as the ultimate challenge. Finally, the soft, foam spheres are a staple of the PE equipment room. Adding 6 brought our total to 20, which is the perfect amount to have in stock. It has become the standard that there is no budget at Montera for the Woodshop program and I am left to find funding to run the entire program. Our PTO helps out a bit but the majority of our funding is through generous donors like you. \r\n When our wood arrived on the truck the students got to have the experience of unloading it and then loading the wood into our wood storage room. They learned how lumber is delivered and all about splinters too! It is a great experience for them to see how the lumber arrives, then unload it and then go straight to working with it. They can see and participate in the transformation of the wood from rough cut lumber into finely shaped and sanded furniture. \r\n The students (and their parents) are so proud of their chairs when they are completed. The new clays, glazes, and tools allowed our students to get busy making goods for our Winter Artists Market, an event where students can sell their goods and network with students in high school CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs in our district and to see what those programs are like, while getting important business experiences in pricing and selling their work, engaging with the public, and making business transactions. By providing them with some materials, you allowed them to make more items to sell and to have more freedom with what to make in the lead-up to this event.\r\n\r\nIn this time of AI and screens, it's so important to give students more opportunities to make things with their hands. Students love ceramics and I think this is one of the unspoken things they do love about it. Clay is just clay. We may have more modern equipment and more modern clay and glazes these days, but the processes of working with and firing clay really haven't changed much since ancient times. There is something very primal about making something out of clay and then firing it. These skills can not be automated. AI can't make a better pot. Though they may not say so, students do enjoy \"unplugging\" a bit and spending some creative time in the analog art of ceramics.
