These activities have such an impact on student's language development as well! As a speech therapist that is huge! I have had multiple students make up songs about the food, use new descriptive vocabulary and even create new play ideas involving selling fruits and veggies. It has brought so much more excitement. When the students acknowledge and had access to new \r\nmaterials such as the cash register, Melissa and Doug play food items, the magna tile farm animals, and the doll house items the glow on their face is just priceless. The students instantly began to explore.\r\nDue to your contribution the students were expanding their language skills and social skills. For example, when I first added the magna tile farm animals to the light table some of my students were talking to each other in both English and their home language naming the horse, pig, chicken, and the cow. Then they began to build a farm for the animals. They did really well with sharing us of space and materials. \r\nAlso with the doll house items added to the doll house was a great success as well. The student was able to dress up the kitchen, the bedrooms, living room, and bathroom with the materials that was provided. You could hear the children say, \" its time to take a bath or I'm cooking dinner\" then they would put the dolls in the areas that they were focusing on. This activity only allows 3 students at a time, so the students are learning to take turns in this area of play. The new items brought interest, creativity, along with smiles. The students were so excited to play with the magnetic tiles . They worked together to build great structures, and when they stood side by side making there own structure they had conversations with each other about what they were building. You could hear the students say, \"pass me the yellow one\" or \" do you like my castle\". This activity became such an interest that a timer had to be set so other children could get a turn. \r\n\r\nAnother item that kept the students interest was the kinetic sand. They were able to use molds of different things. They would either fill the mold with kinetic sand or press the mold down into the kinetic sand. The students loved to see the after effect of the kinetic sand molding into something, such as a sea shell or beach castle. Some students are non-speaking, but are learning the concept of taking pictures and smiling when given a verbal prompt.
